David Normal: Illuminations

When your name is “Normal,” you have to do something to stand out. David Normal has created the subgenre of painting he calls “Illuminations,” paintings on both front and back of a canvas stretched on both sides. The light passing through creates an almost unearthly glow, and the light changing during the day alters the mood of the colors he uses—sometimes subtle, sometimes saturated.

It changes the whole gallery experience; instead of the art being on the walls, on the periphery, the paintings are hung in the middle of the room, demanding focus and attaining an almost sculptural presence in the space. Subjects like “The Human Tree” and “Chemical Imbalance” (pictured) have a frenetic energy, yet serenity at the center of the cyclone. The work is reminiscent of Juxtapoz magazine founder Robert Williams; and would be at home in those pages. The atmosphere evoked is somehow both sacred and surreal.
